Is TOEFL iBT accepted for visas?
TOEFL iBT scores can be used to meet visa requirements for English proficiency in several countries. The TOEFL website has visa information for Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK and Europe, and the United States, as well as general tips for applying for a visa. We recommend that you check with the appropriate government agency for the most current requirements.
Test structure
The test is divided into four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. The Reading section includes tasks such as completing words, reading everyday texts, and reading academic passages, with about 50 items and approximately 30 minutes of base time. The Listening section features tasks like choosing responses, listening to conversations, announcements, and academic talks, with 47 items and about 29 minutes. The Writing section includes building sentences, writing emails, and contributing to academic discussions, totaling 12 items and around 23 minutes. The Speaking section focuses on listening and repeating as well as interview-style responses, with 11 items and about 8 minutes.
Overall, the test takes roughly two hours to complete, not including directions. Because the test is adaptive, the exact number of items and total time may vary from one test-taker to another.
How long are TOEFL iBT scores valid? When do they expire?
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Scores will not be reported or sent by ETS after 2 years.
Why are the Reading and Listening scores shown at the end of the test unofficial in TOEFL iBT?
All TOEFL scores go through ETS quality checks before being officially released. The unofficial TOEFL iBT scores might change after statistical analysis.
How long does the TOEFL iBT test take?
The test takes just under 2 hours to complete. You should plan for 2.5 hours, allowing 30 minutes for check-in.
